The area south of the pan originally was used as a buffer zone to stop spreading livestock diseases further south. To enforce the restrictions there were built two military forts, Namutoni in the northeastern part and Okaukuejo (means the woman that gives birth every year) in the southwestern part, these two places acts today as campsites.
