it's a jungle out there


The following morning we drove onto another spectacular site - The Serengeti National Park, which is Africa's best known game reserve. Its name comes from the Maasai word "Siringet" referring to an "endless plain" and here one can witness one of the greatest concentration of animals left on earth.

The greatest concentration of animals left on earth seemed to have disappeared that day, we drove for hours and hours and only managed to see one slightly unclean one-eyed impala, that night it also rained so much as if it was the last rain in history
. Next morning we drove off at dawn, still wet, hoping to see some game, and this time we did! Very few times you'll be able to see a lion hunting or even moving during the day, but seeing a male lion attacking a prey is very unusual, it's usually the lioness who's the hunter.

Driving along in the Serengeti area one often meets the young Maasai male warriors. All dressed in black, with ochre covered faces and just circumcised t
hey must stay like this for a month (not circumcised but with a covered face). Previously, according to Maasai tradition, they had to go out and kill a lion to be a worthy Maasai warrior, but now it's prohibited for them to hunt.
